Driving in Thailand

You may rent a car with a foreign driving license. International driving licenses/permits (IDL/IDP) may be required depending on your home countries law requirements. Drivers holding a valid driving license of the 10 ASEAN member countries can use their national driving license in Thailand without the need to obtain an IDL/IDP. These countries are Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

In Thailand, cars drive on the left. At junctions (intersections) and traffic circles (roundabouts), you must give way to vehicles approaching from the right. Drivers are allowed to use the right lane to pass slower moving vehicles, as long as there is more than one lane traveling in the same direction.

The national speed limit is 120 km/h on freeways and four-lane roads, 100 km/h on roads with more than one lane in both direction, and 90 km/h on ordinary roads.

Be aware of colored curb markings. A red and white curbside means no Parking. A yellow and white curbside means no parking, but temporary loading/unloading of goods or passengers is allowed. A black and white curbside means parking is allowed. Avoid parking in front of driveways and houses as the owner may have the vehicle towed.
